Dr Flavia Huygens
Executive Director, Founder and Chief Scientific Officer

Flavia’s 30-year teaching and research career has been focused on molecular microbiology, with a particular focus on human pathogens.

Flavia’s expertise and exceptional ability to bring together emerging technology in molecular microbiology, genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics has culminated in the creation of InfectID, a diagnostic test that identifies bacterial, fungal and viral pathogens.

Paul Carboon
Executive Director, Founder and Chief Executive Officer

Paul has 25 years of commercialisation experience in the technology sector. He brings to Microbio a deep understanding of commercial management, product management and product development.

Paul has successfully taken four greenfield projects to market with products that continue to achieve multimillion-dollar annual revenues.

Paul is a leader in biotechnology innovation. He currently serves on the AusMedtech Advisory Group and is a founding adviser with the BridgeTech Program. Paul is also an Honorary Fellow of BioTechnology at Melbourne University and has been a judge for the prestigious Eureka awards.

Matt McNamara
Executive Director

Matt is passionate about commercialising promising human healthcare technologies. Matt continues to invest in and commercialise great healthcare technologies through an exciting portfolio of executive/non-executive board and advisory roles.

Matt has more than 30 years of experience in the healthcare and medical sciences sector, including more than 20 years as a venture capitalist; 14 years as CIO at BioScience Managers (4 funds. >$200M FUM. >20% IRR) Prior to this Matt was CEO of SciCapital pre-seed fund and also served as SVP Business Development for eBioinformatics Inc. Initially, Matt spent over a decade in the pharma industry working in Sales & Marketing with Merck & Co. and in General Management at Johnson and Johnson Medical Pty Ltd.

Matt has a BSc (Hons) in Molecular Biology, an MBA, and is a GAICD.

Simon Love
Chief Commercial Officer and Chief Financial Officer

Simon brings more than 30 years of senior corporate experience across multiple industries in a broad range of C-Suite roles (including CEO and CFO) with responsibility for management of diverse businesses, significant corporate M&A transactions, technology transformation, and management of large-scale international business expansion projects in Australia, Asia, North America and Europe.

Simon’s broad commercial background is driving the commercial activities of Microbio in areas such as strategic commercial planning, financial forecasting, strategic partnership identification and negotiation and planning for international commercialisation.

Maryam Younes
Regulatory and Quality Officer

Maryam has been part of Microbio since its inception, initially as a research associate and now as the Regulatory and Quality Officer. Maryam is collaborating with consultants to develop and administer Microbio’s Quality Management System and regulatory pathway.

Maryam has a Master of Biotechnology and is passionate about health economics; the potential clinical impact of InfectID on blood stream infection management; and the intersection between scientific, commercial and regulatory processes.

Erin Meyers
Business Development and Communications

Erin Meyers has more than 20 years of experience in business development and communications in the higher education, financial services and health-research sectors. Erin has a Master of Business in Organisational Communication Studies and brings Australian and US experience in delivering audience-focused strategic communications.

Dr Chandan Mangar
Microbiology Laboratory and Project Manager

Chandan has a number of years’ experience managing laboratories in both academia and industry. Chandan brings this experience to his role overseeing all research and development and product verification activities for Microbio.

Chandan has completed a PhD in immunology and a Bachelor of Biotechnology (Honours 1A) in microbiology.

Lisa Simms
Research Associate

Lisa has 30 years of experience in molecular genetics research in the areas of cancer and chronic inflammatory disorders. She also has extensive experience in laboratory management and biobanking. Earlier in her career, Lisa worked as a medical microbiologist. Lisa will be overseeing the research and development of Microbio’s antimicrobial susceptibility test.

Corey Davies
Senior Research Assistant

Corey’s significant research laboratory experience has been focused on molecular biology, particularly human pathogens. Corey brings skill in the use of diverse technologies in molecular microbiology, genomics and bioinformatics. Corey has completed a Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours) and is currently pursuing a PhD in molecular microbiology.

Nadeesha Jayasundara
Senior Research Assistant

Nadeesha completed her Master’s degree (Research) in molecular microbiology at Queensland University of Technology under the supervision of Flavia Huygens. Nadeesha’s experience includes laboratory-based research positions since 2014. Nadeesha is focusing on optimizing InfectID on Security Sensitive Biological Agents as part of Microbio’s collaboration with DMTC.

Dr Sumeet Sandhu
Senior Research Assistant

Sumeet has more than 10 years’ experience working in NATA accredited microbiology laboratories. Sumeet brings experience in advanced genome-based molecular diagnostic techniques. She is responsible for research and verification activities associated with InfectID. She holds a Bachelor and Master’s degree (Honours) in microbiology and biotechnology and recently completed a PhD in clinical molecular microbiology and bioinformatics.

Amore Pretorius
Research Assistant

Amore is assisting the research team with product design and development, and the establishment of manufacturing. Amore is currently completing her PhD in clinical molecular microbiology and bioinformatics with a particular focus on resistance and virulence characterisation and bacterial biofilms under the supervision of Dr Flavia Huygens. Amore completed a Bachelor of Biomedical Science and continues to teach as a sessional academic within the School of Biomedical Science at QUT.
